G9 Ikelite housing / DS-51 TLL not working

12 posts
  1. I have done a bunch of reading but still don't quite get it... I have a G9 in a Ike housing with 2 DS-51 strobes.

When I have the camera out of the housing I set C1 to Av, Mandatory flash, and "auto settings" under the flash setting in the tools menu. When I put the camera in the housing and hook up the hot shoe .. etc and I look in the menu the flash settings are grayed out... The camera also does not recognize the strobes as a flash unit.

My bigger concern as in Av mode I can't seem to get the shutter speed to go under 1 sec. I though it was not supposed to go below 1/60th. No matter what aperture I pic it is 1 sec. Could it be that I have the Flash set to Second Curtain? How are others getting the shutter speed down?

The Strobes will fire but on some random power and TTL is not working and the camera does not even see the strobes. I think it needs to go back to Ikelite.

    Thanks,

    Jeremy

  2. I do not have your housing/strobes so cannot speak to the eTTL question but I have a G9.

I am taking very attractive pics of my computer room carpet (just for you) in AV and the shutter speed is fast, much faster than 1/60 sec at all aperatures.

I have flash set to AUTO in the tools menu.

I tried both first and second curtain.. no difference in shutter speed, as expected.

Sorry I cannot be of more help but I am not able to simulate your issue.

Do you have the same issue AV/shutter speed with the camera out of the housing?

Now, just need to find the market for carpet photos. I took the correct angle photos so I have the market... CORNERED!

  3. It works great out of the housing... I myself have some excellent carpet photos.... When in the housing the "flash sub menu" is grayed out and I am not sure how to control it.

    Thanks for your help though.

  4. So I found the problem if anyone else is experiencing it. The plastic cover over the TTL circuitry was apparently tightened down to much from the factory... I backed off the screws a turn or so and magically I had TTL and the camera recognized the strobes.

This is quite disconcerting to me and am worried about the quality of the product as I embark on my honeymoon but hey.. at least its working.

So. let me get this straight...

You are heading out on your honeymoon and worried about the equipment failing... um...

And you find if you loosen your screws a bit, the problem goes away?

    Is THAT what I read?

I can add nothing to that!

    That's funny Dave!

Jeremy, Here's hoping it keeps working. :D:):P Have great time, :P

Take lots of pictures to share.

    Dave-

I think you read that backwards... I am awfully exited and my equipment is working great but I am just worried I may turn the screws to hard... :D

  8. Thanks for clearing up that little point. Sometimes I miss those little details.

glad you got it all working and hoping you have a great time!

  9. Hi JP

I have a friend that has the same problem. Which screw did you find was overtightened?

    Where exactly was this screw?

Maybe a shot of the location would be great!!

Hope you had a nice Honeymoon.

I didn't snap a pick but it is real strait forward. Back the 2 screws holding the black cover over the TTL conversion electronics down. There are 2 chrome screws that hold on the black cover down and I backed them off about a turn. I sent it to Ikelite and they put a deeper cover on. When I took it apart I noticed the TTL circuitry is a 2 circuit boards stacked on top of one another. It looks hand soldered thus I would bet there is some inconsistency in thickness. It seems that the cover presses on the electronics causing some kind of short or open circuit. Backing off the screws relieve the pressure and things begin to work as intended.

I did have a great honeymoon.. Thanks. Pics should be up over the weekend. I was very pleased with the G9.

I took off the black cover off and still had the problem.. Spoke to Rodger at Ike and sent the housing to him last week.

    Will keep you advised..

I was told that the TTL does not work in Manual Mode at all.. Only in AV and TV. What ever happened to just "A" and "S"? :chatterbox:

That is correct.. annoying as anything. I think I am going to ride the g9 out till the D90 SLR comes out and a housing. Finally a SLR that will shoot movies....

I don't see why they would not give the user the option to use TTL in manual or at least set the slowest shutter speed in Av mode. 1/60th is a little slow to freeze fish's eyes and tails.
