Hi, I'm new to the site and looking for some advice. I've a Canon 1Ds II and a 400D but no experience of photographing watersports or underwater. I've been asked to take some photos of kitesurfing probably from a dinghy and I want to know if its possible to buy some cheaper "splashproof" housing rather than go for the full underwater kit. Apologies if this is a stupid question but I'd really appreciate some advice. Thanks.

There are waterproof camera bags from plastic and Plexiglas window that, e.g. Aquapac.
The manufacturers says that its good also for diving but I don't know anyone that will put id DSLR into it and dive.

if the plan is to stay topside most of the time in the dinghy then maybe something like these waterproof DSLR bags might do.

If you are on a pretty reliable boat there is no need for a housing. I went to whale watch trips on RIB's, these boats are rocksolid. If you expect splashes, a bin liner, a dry cloth and a safe bag might be all you need.
When I was in the red sea, there was a group of Kite surfers that attached a camera to the kite. It took a few runs to aim the camera properly, but then the images where spectacular (birds eye view). Unfortunately, they did loose the camera, and i dont know if they found it back or not.
