New to site and U/W photography

  1. Hi all Just wanted to drop in, introduce myself and get some thoughts on a few pictures. I dove a ton in the early to mid 90s, finally giving it up in 1996 after suffering from complete burn out. I sold off all my gear at the point, including my Nikonos V. When I turned 40 two years ago I decided that it was time to go back into the water. I didn't realize how much I missed it until I began doing it again. Well, long story short, I'm back and after going to Belize last summer decided I needed to start shooting pictures again.

I know in the title I say I'm new to U/W photography. I really am. The Nikonos V was a wedding present and I was very ill equipped and uner prepared to actually get much out of it. 15 years later, I still consider myself a newbie in the realm of photography. I really only began developing a rudimentary understanding of the science involved when I decided to by a D-SLR for my recent trip to PNG and Fiji. Anyway, here's a few of the shots I took while there. I have a flickr site as well, so if you're interested in more, feel free to drop in there.

    Thanks for having me.

  2. Hi partner, welcome to wetpixel. Glad you found your way back to diving. I'm like you in that I'm trying to relearn everything the nikonos taught me. Have fun here, there are some great people!

I really like the second image, very nice ^_^

    Steve

  3. That crab is super! ^_^

  4. Hey Steve, most folks are trying to forget anything that a Nikonos taught them... lol

Seriously, welcome (back) to the Madness and your second shot gets my vote too.

    Take care, Tim

  5. Welcome back to diving, it's great to hear your story!

I love your boxer crab and hey, I never even knew they existed in Belize. How common are they there? Did you see it in the day or at night?

  6. Welcome to Wetpixel and the wonderful world of underwater photography! Your photos are marvelous.

The good news about digital photography is that the learning curve is very short compared to film. And the equipment we have today is light years ahead of the Nikonos.

Thanks for the warm welcome. All the pictures are from PNG.

Belize was my first warm water trip after I decided to start to diving again. At that point, I was just glad to convice the wife that we had to do it by liveaboard and didn't even consider camera equipment at that time. The captain of the Sun Dancer mentioned that he was heading to PNG the following summer and it wasn't too hard for us to decide to tag along. Naturally, I couldn't go 1/2 way around the world and not take a camera, so yet another piece of insanity was brought into my life.

Oh OK, I thought the boxer was an Indo-Pacific species!
