ikelite DS125 and the DS160 on one set?

4 posts
  1. now that I bought the Tokina (and 8"dome) :) I am planning to buy my second strobe within a couple of weeks.

I own a DS125 but am now considering to buy the DS160 as my second strobe.

    Is this a good choice?

the recycle-time of the DS160 is a bit slower (on full power) but maybe the fact that it has more power will mean that it doesn't fire on full power, even when the DS125 fires at full power, so it could be just as fast. Is this the case?

This ofcourse depends on the way the camera "talks"to the strobe in TTL. does it tell the strobe how much power to use or does it just effect the duration of the flash?

having this setup may also effect the amount of light in your picture. (less on the DS125's side?).

this could be a good thing, I guess, because it means that you get more depth in your picture (so I've heard)

well, as you can tell, I'm kind of a newby to working with 2 strobes, can someone shed some light on this question??

    thanks in advance,

    Daniel

  2. I hope not, cause I just order one to go with my 125. Normally you do want two of the same strobes. Easier to match the lighting or create ratioed lighting.

I doubt the difference in recycle rate makes a difference. The 125 recycles faster than I can line up a second shot anyway.

If I remember correctly if you want to set the weaker strobe up as the primary strobe and the stronger as the secondary.

  3. so it could be best then, to either sell my DS125 and get two DS160's or just get another DS 125.

In the low viz greenwater here I don't need more strobepower, but I'm not sure the same goes voor tropical water..

is the extra 50 watt a big advantage in fisheye photography?

  4. If you do regular night dives the 160 could be a good option as it has

the low power drain led light in it, that is if you use the modeling light

for focusing and not a dedicated focus light.

    Cheers,

    Jim.
