  5. Right smack under the boat was an old, abadoned lobster trap that was adorned in sponges and corals of all kind. The whole thing was bursting with life.. there were tiny grunts hovering above it, a juvenile grey angel about half an inch in size fluttering its whole body against the slight current inside, arrow crabs on every corner of the trap and in between the wood planks, and a monster-sized hermit crab trying to dig itself into the trap beside it. This fella was inside a huge conch shell.. probably the biggest hermit crab I've ever seen.

Now the other dirt you guys like.. the camera stuff...

I shot this with my Olympus 5050 and the Olympus macro lens. I get better magnification with this lens than I do with the Super Macro mode of the camera plus I can zoom in to 103mm (max zoom?) and stay further away from the subject. The 3/4-inch minimum focus of the Super Macro makes it very difficult to photograph any creature that isn't drunk from a night out in the town. I used one strobe that I unattached from my tray and carefully placed it inside the lobster trap to light the arrowcrab from a 90 degree angle. The planks of wood on the trap helped to shade any light from striking the camera directly... this shot was taken from in between the planks. What else??... Settings.. settings... let's see...

    Aperture: F8

Shutter: 1/160 sec (I wanted to expose the beautiful sponge background otherwise I would have used a faster shutter speed to darken the background)

    Spot Focus

    ISO 64

    ..and lots of luck

    Hope this is enough.
