Travel Case For SLR Gear?

3 posts
  1. I am going to be flying with my underwater camera setup for the first time in a few weeks. I have a Canon Xti, Ikelite case, 60mm lens, mid range zoom lens, flat port, dome port, and one DS-125 strobe. I did a little research and decided to get the Storm im2500 case (with the Velcro dividers, not the foam) to use a carry-on and was hoping to fit the case, strobe, and lenses into it. Unfortunately, it arrived this week and it doesn't look like I can even fit the Ikelite case in it unless I remove the entire Velcro divider system and the foam from the top of the case – which to me seems to defeat the purpose of a protective case.

In some of the other posts on this forum, people said they were using the Storm iM2500 to transport some of their camera gear… did you have to remove all of the protection to do this? Did the foam style work better?

Does anyone have any other suggestions for cases or ways to transport the gear? I would prefer it to be in something that I can carry onto the plane (Continental – L+W+H must be 51 inches or less) so that I don't have to risk checking it. I like rolling storage, but could live without.

    Thanks!

  2. There is a pinned thread all about this topic at the top of this forum, check it out, everyone's got their own solution. Here's mine:

The biggest problem with pelican-type cases is the depth - you must lay your dome port and housing flat in order to fit them. The ideal case has enough depth to allow you to keep your dome port, housing & strobes vertical, to minimize the horizontal space they take up.

My solution is the Kata CC-195 case, designed for large pro video cameras

    - i measured its about 48 inches total dimensions, and it's tall enough so one can fit the dome and housing upright, with padded dividers in between. You have to buy the extra Modi-Vers divider set to cut the appropriate sizes. Its not watertight, but is quite solid - these guys also make bulletproof vests. It also has an attachment for a small trolley kata makes, i have that too and its great (apparently the trolley comes free with it now...). Cheers,

  3. I think the IM2500 is carryon size. I use the Pelican 1510 which is also small. I remove all the dividers and use clothes to pad the components...dual purpose :)
