First saltwater dives with my new Tokina

  1. I finally made it out to the coast to do a little ocean diving and was pretty excited to give my Tokina 10-17 it's first baptism in salt water. I'm a new comer to shooting digital underwater and just replace my F90 early this spring. I had always shot my beloved 17-35mm when I was using film and had never really tested the fisheye waters. All I can say is OH MY! How could have I been missing this for so long?

Here are a couple of shots from that first dive. I was in Powell River and the water conditions were pretty much pea soup making the photography a little challenging. I'm not sure I would have had anything usable had I not been using the tokina.

I understand that the Emerald Princess is the sister statue to the bronze in the Cayman Islands. She's a little overgrown so they're talking about scrubbing her clean; I'm not sure how I really feel about that.

After shooting the Emerald Princess, I turned to head back to shore and swam right into a web of tentacles. I generally don't wear gloves so long as the water temp is above ~7C so this one stung me pretty good! I had angry welts all over the back of my hands, but I didn't let that stop me form capitalizing on the photo op. This one was about 0.7m in diameter and though I understand the Lions Mane can get quite a bit larger, it was still very cool to see. It made my dive regardless of getting stung!

  2. Very nice; the 10-17 can be addicting. Sometimes I have to force myself to change lenses for something else, I get kind of lazy with it on.

  3. Very good! that is for sure a beautiful and funky jelly fish :) . I also liked the green colour of the water.

I would not scrap the statue.

  4. Nice, I especially like the last Lion's Mane Jelly photo.

  5. Nice shots Michael. The last one's a real beaut. I am off to Port Hardy in a couple of weeks. Thanks for the preview.

  6. Lovely images Michael and the green water background looks great, especially with the Lions Mane pic's.

I couldn't figure out until I read the text at the bottom what the 2nd one was, now I know I think I really

like the cold water version, I think it's probably the flowers in her hair that do it for me

    Cheers,

    Jim :)
