Gran Canaria Mobulas

  1. Yesterday we went to dive after work because the ocean let us dive in a very special site where the mobulas congregate every year around july. It was the first time we could dive there in the last three or four months so we did not know if they were there...but they were!

We also dove with a very big stinglessray that was feeding or something and not caring about us. They get their tails chopped off by the fishermen and then are thrown back to the water :)

There was a lot of life around (the little shrimps that cover the sand as if they were a blanket are why the mobulas come for)

  2. Great images of those great creatures.

What the hell they have to do with the stinglessray's tails? :)

    Thank you very much Arnon.

The thing is that they fish the rays unintentionally and once on board they find dangerous to unhook them with the tail swinging around so they cut it, unhook them and throw them back to the water.

  4. David, love that second one of the mobula. Just love the silver wingtips.

  5. Very nice, indeed. I hope to time a visit correctly one day.

I hope Pedro comes out with you soon. I want to imagine him scrambling across the rocks to the shore entry lugging his heavy Seacam! That's the best way to deal with my envy. :)

  6. Very cool. The first one works very nicely because of the highlights, normally it would not.

  7. Beautiful images of the Rays David, I enjoyed having both the down and up perspectives

We get the same thing with our large Ray species here, I've bumped into many different

individuals sans tail. Not nice to see but at least they are put back in the ocean.

    Cheers,

    Jim :)
