Sea & Sea Guide Number Controller for up to Two YS-350TTL Strobes

  1. Hi all,

I cam across this guide number controller from Sea&Sea. It is for the old YS350 but I think it is neat!

Let me explain, I have a S&S DX-D50 and 2x YS90 TTL DUO strobes. My problem is the fact that I can only set to 1/2 or Full power while sometimes, especially in macro I need less (1/4 or 1/8). I know I can just close the aperture a bit more, but sometimes I want a very shallow DOF.

I've been wondering if there is anything like that guide number controller that could do the job or if anyone knows if that specific controller would work with the YS90?

I do have a work around for the moment, but very limited, i.e. I am using a couple of soft cheese (white) containers over the strobes to reduce further the F number.

I could of course make the adaptation of the housing for the new TTL controller but I prefer full manual control over my shoots.

    Daniel.

  2. Hi Daniel,

I'm not sure if this will work for you or not, but some of the TTL controllers allow you to manually adjust strobe power from the camera (eg Heinrichs Weikamp have M-TTL mode). This may allow you to get around the problem of halving insufficient manual power settings. Exactly how to proceed would depend on what kind of camera you're using.

    Cheers,

    Mike

  3. Thanks Mike. Indeed it seems M-TTL mode with the Heinrichs Weikamp converter can be the solution (although not a very cheap one $550!!)

Thank you for your help. :drink:

    BTW, I am using a Nikon D50.
