Thr right lense?

6 posts
  1. I have only used a canon 50 mm macro lense on my eos350d in sea & sea housing with reasonable results. Now I fancy going down the cfwa route and was considering the canon efs 10 -22 with suitable dome and diopter. Has anybody used this lense? and does it give a wide enough angle at 10mm for large critters close in? [a chance encounter with a whaleshark in sharm el shiek with the macro lense was very frustrating!!]Also is ttl control of strobes essential for cfwa as I have been mnaually exposing my shots so far, regards chris j

  2. Chris,

At 10mm it does go pretty wide. But at 10mm, the corners get real soft (blurry). You get better results at a higher zoom and/or closing the aperture. It's a great lens for topside and I really enjoy it for landscape and group party shots, but I got tired of trying to figure out which diopter to use.

For underwater, you might want to consider the Tokina 10-17mm fisheye. It's a versatile lens. My 10-22 has been relegated to topside only since getting the Tokina fisheye. Search for a post by Alex Mustard on his use of this lens for Close focus WA.

As for TTL, I found the S&S TTL did OK with close focus WA but lately prefer manual (well actually I sold the TTL converter...)

  3. Chris,

If I could figure out to attach pix to this post I have a couple of examples of cfwa with the 10-17...give me a hint and I'll post them.

    Pakman,

How do you shoot with dual strobes without the converter? Dual sync cord or slave one strobe? I'm pretty green and headed on a liveaboard trip in a few weeks...shooting without the converter ='s one less thing to break!

    Thanks!

    Mike
