Singapore air reduces Baggage allowance

  1. When confirming my reservation on Singapore air today, the agent told me he was required to inform me of their new baggage policy. for Business class, 2 checked bags with a maximum weight of 50 pounds each. carry-on is limited to a maximum of 2 bags with each bag weighing 15 pounds or less. My thinktank international with my nikon housing lenses and strobes weighs in at about 40 pounds my laptop bag weighs in at about 10 pounds. They fit together totaling 50 pounds. no room for cloths or anything else. My dive gear bag weighs in at about 50 pounds. 15 pounds sounds impossible to me if I carry-on my photo gear.

    Suggestions?

  2. That policy has been in effect since April 1st. There's a thread about it in this subforum. If you are not a Krisflyer high mileage flier, they sometimes will enforce it especially when the flight is full. The new non-stop business class flight, I've never been harassed. I purposely checked in as a non-PPS member just to see if there was a difference. Unfortunately, I take that flight so often the station supervisor recognizes me, so I asked her flat out what the enforcement practice was. She told me it really depends on how full the flight is and the frequent flyer status. In other words, your mileage may vary.

  3. Your laptop is not included in the carry on allowance. Travelling as a lowly economy passenger from Vancouver to Manado recently, no one checked our carry-on bags. (Quite nicely, they forgot to weigh my checked bags, too!) However, my carry ons look nothing like photo gear, and the allowance for economy is a ridiculous 7 kilos. Although I do not carry on my housing, I did manage three cameras, chargers, a strobe, lots of batteries, Fixlight, laptop, and all sorts of important stuff made it on with no problem. As I often check in solo, I can't have someone watch my carry ons while I check in, so I am at the mercy of the agent. I saw no one in Singapore checking carry-ons. I did notice that what people were attempting to take on board was far less than in the past. My stuff which included a roll aboard and Tenba messenger, topped out at over 30 kilos between them. By the way, my flight was full on both directions.

You could however, be checking in at a more naziesque airport where you may encounter issues. May I suggest that you avoid Brisbane?

    Bon chance,

  4. Most of us mere mortals travel in economy. Singapore Airlines International weight allowances are 20Kg and 7kg hand carry. Just about enough for my laptop and underwater RED housing!!! Excess fees are ludicrously high. I tend to look at shipping gear ahead of time these days, it just adds up to crazy amounts when traveling with gear. If its a paying gig then obviously the client pays but shooting for stock, gets expensive.

    Cheers,

    Mark.

P.S Malaysia Air is my nemesis at $96 per excess KG between London and Bali
