white balance with magic filter

3 posts
  1. I have a Fuji F50fd with fuji housing. I purchased the auto magic filter and mounted it inside the

housing. I have been playing around with setting the white balance with the filter in the housing.

My question is this. Would it be better to set the camera to auto white balance and let the filter do it's

magic (get it?) or can I gain anything by using a manual white balance setting with the filter in place?

I hope this hasn't been answered already, but please be patient if it has.

Thank you in advance for any input.

    Jay

  2. On my Fuji F40 I found that AUTO WB worked well with the Auto Magic filter, but on my Fuji F50 AUTO WB does not seem so good. So generally I use manual WB with the Auto Magic filter with that camera. I tend to shoot at least -1/2 stop underexposure and use ISO AUTO 400.

This was shot with the Fuji F40, Auto Magic on AUTO WB at a depth of 10m (33ft):

From my first few dives with the F50, I have found it hard to duplicate these results unless I use Manual White Balance with the auto magic filter. With Manual white balance it works very nicely with the filter:

I have only just started using the F50, but with the F40, auto magic and manual white balance I was pleased with the colours of images down to about 18m (60ft):

  3. Alex,

Thanks for the help. Those are some awesome pictures. It's funny, you would

think that the newer F50 would do as well or better than the F40. I hope to

do as well as you did with my system.

    Thanks again,

    Jay
