New Mini-Notebook For Portable Storage

8 posts
  1. With a big trip coming up in October, I started looking at new options for portable storage. My IBM X23 is getting very long in the tooth, and I didn't want to deal with replacing the 30GB drive with a bigger one. So yesterday afternoon I took a look at Lenovo's site. Just yesterday morning they put their new mini notebook up for purchase:

    Ideapad S10

    Intel Atom processor 1.6 GHz

    Windows XP Home Edition

    10.2 inch screen

512 MB (upgradeable to 2 GB)

    80 GB hard drive

    Wifi

3-cell battery (6 cell available later)

    Cost: $429

I googled for a coupon code and found one for 15% off. Code is USPIDEAPAD15

Total cost $364.65 with free shipping.

ETA is September 23rd. I called Lenovo about a separate question (site said the red one comes with an optical drive; it doesnt). The guy explained that they give themselves a very big cushion. It should ship on September 5.

I'm considering dumping Windows, but only if I could get iTunes to run on Linux.

Please could you let me know what connectivity the ACER has. Does it have a PCI-e slot or Firewire?

Finally - how does it handle photoshop and raw/large images?

    Hi! Scuba SI

    I don't think it has a PCI-e nor firewire

    These r the I/O Interface

    3 x USB 2.0 ports

    1 x Multi-in-1 card reader

1 x SD™ Card reader for storage expansion

1 x External display (VGA) port

    1 x Headphone/speaker/line-out jack

    1 x Microphone-in jack

    1 x Ethernet (RJ-45) port

    1 x DC-in jack for AC adapter

I don't use Photoshop, using the standard Canon supplied software... Don't have any raw files with me at the moment to compare, will have to get back to you on that... Using a Pentium 4- 3.06GHz, 1G RAM PC in the office & I remember feeling that the PC is very slightly faster...

Ok, have used the 3.06GHz PC to process the RAW files today, the PC is slightly faster than the laptop but I didn't time it...

  6. Does the Acer have an Expresscard slot? If it's got one, then firewire would be easy. It was one of my factors in selecting the Lenovo, which has one slot plus two USB ports.

Well, I guess not... My primarily considerations r the weight & size for the laptop...

Anyway, u've got a gd deal, the Lenovo is inexpensive...

  8. I picked up an Asus 900, 20 gig model that I upgraded to WinXP. Took it to Galapagos last month, it plus a card reader and a spare portable USB drive was all I carried in non-camera gear, it was so nice.. The only apps that were even loaded on it were Lightroom and some silly games the wife likes.

It's NOT a screamer, had no aspirations of it being.

It's NOT made to develop images.

But it IS way more travel friendly than my 17in Dell monster laptop and it DOES let me know if I'm shooting correctly, getting strobes where they should be and giving me a idea if what I'm seeing through the viewfinder is coming out the way I'm expecting it to...

I'd be real skeptical of the speed that they'll get out of the ExpressCard or Firewire over USB, I don't think any of the Atom Processor machines have the horsepower to get jiggy with it.

Then the wife dropped it off the kitchen counter a few days after we came home and destroyed the screen.....

So I guess I'm in the market again =D
