Nikkor 60mm Micro

  1. Hi,

With my budget I would only be able to go with either a flat or dome port for the moment.

(The specific gear I am looking at is Seatool, partnered with D300)

I would like to know what the difference would be housing the Nikkor 60mm Micro behind the Dome port compared to housing it behind the flat port.

What the pros and cons of each setup.

For starter I guess I won't have manual focus ability when housed behind the dome port.

    All input greatly appreciated.

p.s. later down the line i will buy the Tokina 10-17mm so that is one reason why i am looking at the dome port and also from my knowledge, the next place i will be going to have lots of bigger fish spieces, so if the 60mm behind a dome will give me a wider scope i can cover, it might make sense

    Thanks

  2. In my experience it does work but the lens is vulnerable to flare from the flash because it is not hooded and you have trouble getting the dome port up close enough to some subjects because it is so large.

  3. If you try to shoot macro you will :-

1: Find you can't get close enough.

2: When you do you will git the dome on the subject - if it's a 'hard' subject it may damage the dome.

Compared to a dome flat ports are often quite cheap.

  4. Thanks guys!

If i refine my questions, will it be possible to take photos of say a Patato Bass with the 60mm in the Flat port and showing a fair bit of the fish (head and body)

As for sharks and manta ray, what is the likely type of photos one would be able to get with the flat port setup? (coverage wise)

  5. I have used a 60mm lens in a dome port for quite some time without any problems at all. You will lose some magnification (that a diopter will cure) but you will get a slightly wider angle of view. The extra angle of view won't be much, and won't really help with things like large cod (bass), sharks or manta rays.

On a crop sensor camera this setup will more closely imitate the 60mm on full frame (old 35mm perspective), for some this may be desirable.
