Maldives questions

  1. I have a chance to go to the Maldives. This would be on somebody's private boat. The boat is set up for diving, but it is not an established live-aboard dive boat, nor is it associated with a land based resort. I'll have like 10-14 days, starting in mid December. Any particular recommendations of where to go? I will have a new digital photo set up which I am anxious to try.

The boat is set up for diving, and typically hires a guide / dive master / instructor , often a local, who knows the area. Any recommendations of who would be good for this? I can recommend them to the boat.

Finally, I have a question about gear - is there anything specific I should bring for the Maldives? I have a 5mm suit, should I get 3mm or will 5 be OK? Anything else specific to know?

  2. Hey Nathan,

Maldives in mid to late December? Lucky you!! :)

I know for a fact that the south west of the Ari Atoll on dive sites like Pannettone will find you in the water with Mantas and the distinct possibility of Whalesharks at that time of year.

Islands close by like Thudufushi may be able to provide cylinder fills and info on where the palagics are to be found. The dive centre is The Crab managed by Hermann Steiner aka Stoney. He's a top guy with extensive knowlege of this area.

As far as kit goes a 3mm fullsuit would be ideal (the water temp should be around 28 degrees) and will offer some UV and abrasion protection.

Take a good dive light as the night dives are really spectacular.

    Good luck you. :)

Post a trip report when you're done.
