Macro with Gates housing and FX1

  1. I'm interesting in user experiences of macro with Gates FX1. At the moment I have the dome port and would like to know the pros and cons of using the flat port and the flip in diopters.

  2. Andy,

You really would only be using the flat port and diopters for any macro work you would be doing. The Fathoms dome ports are of excellent quality but you do pay for them. The Gates housing for the FX-1 is pretty large and heavy so be prepared to pay some overweight fees at the airport. However, like all Gates housings, the build quality is unsurpassed.

  3. Andy, if I remember correctly, the Gates Dome part is only partial zoom due to the small diameter forcing the virtual image pretty far back. the flat port is more apt for macro work but obviously you lose the flexibility afforded by having the flip diopter. Single element diopters tend to be of lower quality.

  4. There may well still be a report somewhere here in Wetpixel that I made with regards to macro shooting with a Gates / Z1U combo. OK, not the FX1 but just a few more controls to differentiate the two. Flat port with achromatic diopters stacked, the +3.5 and a +2 together.

    Cheers,

    Mark.
