I wonder if any UK divers can help me. I've been photographing this goby (~3-5cm long) on softer sediments in sea lochs. Most authorities regard it as a deeper water fish but I suspect its been misidentified as a painted goby many times. So if anyone has photos records of it I'd be interested to hear. Thanks.
Hi Paul,
Now fish ID is not a strong subject of mine but how does this one grab you ?
Your shot looks very like a two-spotted goby but I've never seen one like this on the seabed as they tend to shoal in mid-water around plants - especially kelp! Where is it from, what depth and was their much weed/kelp nearby?
Hi Paul,
Ah, sorry to disappoint though I did warn you that my ID of fish is not strong!
Just outside the harbour here in Guernsey, about half a mile down the coast.
This one was alone on the bottom at about 22m and no serious weed or kelp for a long way - with our tidal range it tends to get smashed up.
As I recall it was pretty tough to scare as I took a few shots before it took off under a rock.
