Canon HV20/HV30 Ikelite, Wide angle Anyone

  1. Hey guys...

Has anyone tried the HV20/HV30 in a Ikelite 6071 housing and the Fathom/Ikelite WP-80 HD wide angle port

Since I've seen countless threads on hv20/hv30 wide angle headaches and having one of my one, owning the godawful w20 wet lens that creates ghost images and vignetting ( good job Ikelite R&D guys, you've outdone yourselves on that one ) and sucks at HD.

I'd like some input on somebody that actually has tried the port before I fork over another 900$ on something that won't work...

Anybody in the market for a w20 lens, they work great on Ike's sony housing ( thanks again Ikelite R&D guys !!! )

    thanks

  2. Hi there,

I bought the Ikelite housing & HV30 for my Liveboard trip to RedSea Sept 08. I already had the WD20 lens as previous used for digital stills. I had same problem with ghosting (and I had some unfortunate water marks on the lens, but thats another thing). However before you buy another lense try blacking out the front (inside) of the video housing first. I found some black electrical tape onboard and after trial and error the ghosting dissapeared. It was a shame though that I only discovered this on the last few days of my trip.

ps, with regards to the Fathom lens, I am very tempted myself especially as I need to replace the WD20 due to water marks.

Read the mangrove review. There's a short review on the WP80.

  4. We have one of these lenses in rental at a very attractive $50/wk for people who are skeptical of its quality, or want to ensure compatibility with their housing before buying. The rental unit is actually brand new now, the last person who hired it liked it too much to send it back.

  5. I have a Canon HV10 and an Ikelite - very happy with this. Based on the numerous wide angle discussions, I decided for the Inon-UWL-100, which is sold by Ikelite and is leading in many tests. I have a slight vignetting and terribly blurred egdes. Depending on the zoom, 20% to 50% of the footage is not sharp. This wide angle has been recommended by many test and by many people - obviously with other camcorders / housing.

If I may advice - test everything before you buy, unless you have a clear statement from someone who has exactly your cam, your housing, your wide angle.

    Best, Greg

    Hi there,

I have the WP80 with HV30 and Ikelite 6071 and so far so good. I made a few test dives to get familiar with it and the result was as expected. Clear images without ghosting with really great definition. Reproduced in an 40" LCD looks really fine. The only issue with the WP80 assembled in the 6071 case is the macro usage, as zoom cannot be used (only zoom out) due to ikelite not making the necessary adjustments to the zoom activator button (as it is slightly different from the HV20). I thought it would be no problem as I do not use zoom underwater however with the WP80 it may be required for closer macros.

    Regards, Pedro
