Checking your housing?

10 posts
  1. I'm gearing up for a trip to indonesia. I'm going to try to check my housing this time as carry on's are limited to one and it's darn heavy to lug around anyway.

I'm asking about a second bag to carry the housing.

I'm concerned about pelican saying steal me. I'm thinking either hard shell suitcase filled with foam or, as was suggested, a normal hard shell cooler filled with foam. The cooler idea seems great.

Anyone doing this? How is it protecting your housing and making it through safely and successfully?

    Other suggestions?

  2. I use a commerical plastic shipping container from http://www.thermodyne.com

Every thing, except cameras and lens goes in it.

Using fairly rigid foam, everything is packed tightly and can not shift.

I pad lock it and wait while it goes through security.

It gets opened about 20% of the time in the US, 0 in foreign airports.

  3. Use your pelican for the protection. Slip it inside a crappy bag or duffle to hide it.

  4. I too am going to Indonesia, but in a month on Singapore Air from JFK and I am troubled with the carryon restriction of 15 lbs. I plan to put my housing, my wife's housing and our ports in the hole in a lowepro roller 2, http://products.lowepro.com/product/Pro-Roller-2,1998,29.htm. It looks like a regular soft side bag, but is really a hard sided bag.

  5. The lowepro pro roller is bigger than the size wise test and definitely bigger than the allowed airline dimensions... NOT to mention it's already over the 15lbs limit alone without gear.

I plan to check in the lowepro roller 2 with the housings and ports, I agree the #2 is to big to as a carry on. Another bag to consider is the Kata OC 86, http://www.kata-bags.com/product.asp?p_Id=...p;Version=Photo, as a check in. It is lighter than the lowepro roller.

  7. what about porter cases?

hard shelled so you canb check them if needed.

    This is what I do.

You can find some really crapped out luggage at garage sales or I'll bet even at the Goodwill.

Portercase II also do not fit in the size wise. Their measurements are rounded down and the true dimensions are 22" 3/8 x 14"1/4 x 8"1/8. I brought this up to their CEO who gave me this reply:

I knew that our dimensions had grown a little over the 22" x 14" size. But, did not let it bother me because the stated FAA rule was or a total of less than 45" overall....In hind site, I wish that we had kept each dimension under the 22 and 14. However, we are stuck with hard tooling that can only be changed with total replacement.

I had to check it once because it fail size wise in Hong Kong and it is not built to be checked in. The rivets are weak and while that whole trolley thing is novel, it's not worth the money, imho. Btw the bag cracked while checked and of course the only way was to buy a new one... which I did not. Stay away from Porter Cases is my advice. Getting a trolley or porter at the airport is much easier.
