Thoughts on Panasonic Lumix DCM-TZ5??

3 posts
  1. This camera has cropped up in several discussions as an all purpose p&s with its 28-280mm capability and quality lens for a small camera. Based on a little research, my concerns are:

    1) Low light - several reviews suggest not best for low light.

    2) Battery life - dpreview said "average", up to 300 shots/charge unless image stabilization left on and dependent on flash usage. One diver review on the TZ3 said he had to change battery between dives.

    3) Tight fitting housing = more fog management?? Also, how are Panasonic housings?

I'm embarrassed to say I've been using a SeaLife. I've had to change batteries between dives (and seem to be the only one on the boat doing that) and with the tight housing have had to be very diligent in my efforts to prevent fogging. I'd like to get away from both, or at least the battery problem.

Does anyone out there have experience with the TZ5?

    Thanks!

  2. Whatever camera you are using, don't be embarrassed. It's the photographer that matters.

The TZ5 would make an excellent all-around travel camera. It's fast, has a good lens and one of the best video capabilities of a small camera. If you like macro photography, the TZ5 housing can take stacked lenses with the Inon mount. Wide angle is a bit of a problem since the long zoom isn't ideal. Bear in mind that the sort-of-wide 28mm lens is about as wide as any of the SeaLife cameras can get, even with their accessory lenses.

Low light? Are you referring to high ISO settings, or just focusing? Image stabilization gives you a couple of extra stops.

Also consider the FX35 or FX37. These are bit smaller and have a shorter zoom. The plus is that they have a wider 25-100 and 25-125mm lens. In another post on this forum I put a post about my FX37.

The best way to preserve battery power during flash photography is to buy a strobe that can mimic and amplify the camera's preflash. When the camera does it's main flash, it should be at a lower setting. You get faster recycling and better battery life.

  3. Thanks for your reply.

I had decided to get the TZ5 due to it's versatility, however I cannot find a housing anywhere but Japan. They seem to be on backorder throughout the U.S.

Does anyone know if they will be available again and when?

I also haven't found any other cameras that seem to have the TZ5 zoom range and a housing. Let me know if I'm missing something. Definitely not set on Panasonic. However, I will relook at the FX37.
