Housing for Nikon D-60

  1. Hi Wet Pixelers

I've just recently bought myself a Nikon D-60 and I am trying to decide on a housing. So far i have found the Ikelite

    Or the fantasea fd-40x

I have talked to a supplier here in Aus, and it would appear i need to get a separate dome port for a macro lens for the ikelite housing, approx another $200 on top of the housing. I havent been able to find anywhere whether the Fantasea housing will let me use a macro lens or if there is a dome port for this also?

Anyone that uses or has used either setup i would love to hear from you on your opinions/experiences to help give me a better idea on which would be more suitable.

    Thanks in advance! :)

Aquatica have a great housing for the D60 - it accepts the full range of Aquatica accessories and ports.

I know the local dealer - I'm sure he will give you a great deal :)

  3. I've used Ikelite housings for years and always been very happy with them. An advantage with the latest housings is if you also buy Ikelite strobes you get TTL flash.

The Ikelite housings are bulkier than some other housings but are a lot cheaper than most. I don't feel any disadvantage when using my Ikelite alongside other housings.

Finally for a macro lens a flat port is better than a dome port. Dome ports are more often used for wide angle.

  4. I'm about to go from an Ikelite housing to an Aquatica housing, and am really looking forward to it. While the Ikelite isn't bad, there's a lot of room for improvment.

And yes, the Aussie distributor of Aquatica is great to deal with :)

You will pretty much find that with any housing manufacturer you will need different ports for different lenses. This is more required by the optics of housing a camera and lens underwater, plus the extended length of the lens than anything a housing dictates.

Ideally for macro you want a flat port. A dome port will work (and even has some advantages) but you have to get a lot closer to the subject for full magnification and then you may be bumping the port on the reef and may also have trouble getting the light from the strobes onto the subject.

  6. As far as I know, the Fantasea FD-40 (D40x, D60) is discontinued. I haven't been able to get any more. It does allow use of the macro lens with the standard port that came with it.

  7. OK you guys - enough self promotion. I know it's tongue in cheek, but I'm just not up for getting complaints right now.

Are there any advantages for the aquatica? I read somewhere that it doesnt give you access to all of the functions of the d60?? I found that to be similar with the fantasea one. Does anyone know specifically what functions are unavailable with these housings? Or perhaps a good review site that may shed some more light on this??

For the record, my comment wasn't self promotion. The company mentioned is one that I have found good to deal with, but that I m not a part of.

scubaj82, where in Aus are you based? There's a few distributors in Northern Qld, one in SA, an importer in Byron Bay, etc. I've always thought it is handy to be able to see the housing before you buy. You might even be able to find some divers with D60s around.

    Ry.

  10. Based in Sydney, found one mob up at Byron Bay that imports the Ikelite. Thanks a lot for the info guys :)

Uhh, saying a product isn't available anymore is hardly self promotion. The user was looking at a non-exsistant product.

  12. Jack, I don't think he meant you :)
