I am off on a trip to the Similian Islands in November for a 4 day liveaboard.
Does anyone know how rough the seas are out there?
The reason I ask is that I have managed to get the wife to come along, and am starting to worry about her. I have just returned from a Red Sea trip out of Sharm and the sea there was pretty rough and I know that she would not have been able to handle it
Any info would be good
Thanks
I was there in March 2006 and it was pretty calm sailing the entire trip.
Have fun. Thailand is awesome

Thanks for that, I was starting to think I had bitten of more than I can chew taking the missus along
November is normally change month in the Andaman sea for the moonson – early november is more likely to be windy than later. December, january, february and march are considered high season in the area (calmest and driest). In any case, Similans have many areas protected from wind. Compared to most of the open Red Sea, the area is not as choppy. But there can be howlin' currents...

I agree with Cristian and the monsoon wind is on the change and you can have days in Nov/Dec where the wind makes it choppy and have rain showers, fine in the morning and windy in the afternoon. This is not so much of a problem for Similan as you can shelter behind the islands, but I can make for a good 1.5 to 2m swell at Richelieu rock. But the good thing is it's going to be very quiet and there will only be a few boats out
I leave for my first trip of the season on the 25th Oct. I can let you know how it was if you want.

I was on Mermaid 2 6 weeks after the tsunami and it was great. I had a chance to check out Mermaid 1 it was a nicer boat bigger rooms and everything was a little nicer.
I would book either boat again and I would like to return anytime that my schedule would let me. Dive masters were great.

That would be great if you could.
It will be my first time diving in a different place to the red sea, what can I expect to see life wise???
Also, have you got any reccommendations for a place to stay in Phuket, I only need a night each side of my liveaboard trip

depends where you are leaving from, although Phuket isnt massive, it is still quite big. the allamanda laguna resort is very nice, but there are loads of choices available.
have a look at www.sawadee.com great website with all the info you require

Yes they are both very good. Also i think Mermaid 1 goes to Burma and those places most of the season if im correct.Mermaid 1 is also much more luxurious. When i did the trip the boat was still painted in all white.

Amazing night dives at Koh Bon.You will dive Asia's biggest coral head.Richelieu Rock is obviously world famous for whale sharks however i did not see them when i went.Honeymoon bay nice too.Life wise quite alot of banded sea snakes, eels, leopard sharks, barracuda and so on.The diving in the Similan island is much deeper in general than the sites close to phuket like shark point, racha yai, anemone reef.most sites are 30m-40m.
In Phuket i always stay at the Royal Palm Resortel in Patong which is right on the beach near to the Mcdonalds. Not too expensive in off peak.
The new boutique hotels going up all over Patong is much nicer than the big hotels because they are new.In Jan i stayed in a brand new apartment(amazing)in peak season(new years eve) for 1300 bhat.
