Fish and other reef organisms fluoresce red

  1. Glowing fish have scientists seeing red

It was staring them in the face, but somehow generations of marine biologists have failed to notice that a lot of fish in the sea glow a fluorescent red, according to a new study.

    from http://www.abc.net.au/science/articles/200...mp;topic=latest

Notice the link to "Reef fish seen in 'normal' and filtered light" video. (BTW Apologies if this has been posted already, as it is a week old - I haven't been on Wetpixel for a couple of weeks)

"Besides fish, there are lots of fluorescent organisms on the reef, including algae, coral and other small organisms,"

I realised this must be happening when I saw this anemone at a depth well below the penetration of red light so it must have been producing the colour. This photo was taken in available light.
