Identifying technically "good" images

  1. Here's a question that's been on my mind lately ...

Do folks think it would it be possible (and useful) to write a software application that could identify "well-focused" images?

Interesting question from so many levels (especially considering technically good in the subject line). I think for artistic/photographers intent you can never nail something down because it is subjective to one degree or another. Just playing with f/stops and where you are focusing in the photo can lead to different things. I guess the metadata on f/stops can be read and figure out where the image is in fact focused.

In terms of testing to see if there is something wrong with a camera focusing properly on a standard chart or equivalent? That would be cool. Still variables in there, but the more there is something that can tell whether a lens or camera is within spec to us mere mortals who do not have benches and the rest. Kind of fun.

Withg face detection, image stabilzation, sharpening and all the rest, probably is already here somewhere, I just have not found it :P
