Dual or 2 single strobe cables?

8 posts
  1. Hi all,

What's the general concensus for connecting 2 strobes to a housing, where the housing offers dual bulk heads? A single dual cable, or two single cables?

In this case, I'm looking at 2 Inon Z240's, on an Aquatica housing for my 40D.

    Many thanks!

    Ryan.

  2. As cables are a known failure point, you maximise your chance of surviving with some functionality if you adopt a redundant system. I used to travel with three individual cables before I moved to fibre-optic connectors. I have lost a single strobe on a dive, but still managed quality shots with the remaining unit: I would avoid the dual cables (why else buy a housing with dual bulkheads?).

  3. I agree with Tim that two are better, shame I don't have this option with my Ikelite housing.

But there is one advance for the dual cord, its less one point of failure since there is one less bulkheads.

  4. It also depends on which ttl adaptor you are planning on using. I currently use the sea and sea converter. My housing bulkheads are configured with one ttl and the other manual. the sea and sea has 2 outputs for flash cords and I use one for each inon. you can also use a single corded inon and the other is optical slave mode. I went this route after having problems with the internal heinrich converter, probably best way do this is with a nikon sb 800 or 900 as the primary flash and an inon slaved off of that. then you eliminate the converter.

  5. I second this: one less connection = one less risk of failure. My set up is one strobe on cord and the other on slave.

  6. My vote goes for 2 single cables. That is how my setup is looking like as well incl the internal heinrich converter.

I use 2 separate cables and a spare in case of. I have so far not needed it, but one of my INON's died on me.

  7. I recommend going on a trip with 3 single cables and one dual cable. I like using a single cable to each bulkhead - because if one strobe starts acting wonky, you can usually track the problem to one of the cables.

The reason for the dual cord? what if you mess up connecting your cable and flood a bulkhead on your housing? You can switch to the other bulkhead and use the dual cord.

TTL converter = none. I'm planning on giving manual a go.

Thanks for the advice guys. I'm liking the sound of 2 singles so there's redundancy there.
