To shoot 1/60th or not

3 posts
  1. I live in and shoot my videos in a NTSC world, and I am a little unsure of the pros and cons of shooting my videos with the shutter set at 1/60 (vs. 1/100 or so).

I'm not a "pro", and not selling footage for broadcast nor cinema, but I am very serious about obtaining the highest quality videos that I can and desiring to develop good habits. I'm using a little Sony HC7, that does not offer 24P functionality.

Am I correct in understanding that shooting in 1/60 is the overall best choice, the main reason being that this will better facilitate later post conversion to a progressive format? Are there other benefits to shooting at 1/60th? I intend to make DVDs later of the footage. Thats it.

On the other hand, when shooting at 1/60th is there an increased potential for image blur at this slower shutter speed? Given that most all of my underwater shooting is done hand held... perhaps this should be my primary concern?

Thanks in advance for your feedback...

  2. In PAL world if you shoot 50i then normally you would shoot at 1/50. If you drop it you will get more light but images may blur. Shooting at a high shutter speed then you get an stutter / strobe effect.

I would presume if your shooting 60i then a shutter speed of 1/60 would be correct for normal use. You shouldn't find blurring an issue at 1/60th.

  3. It is only when your subjects are moving fast will you see significant motion blur. Another reason to shoot at a higher shutter speed is to freeze the action more for slomo sequences.
