  1. Well done to Bruce Yates (bmyates) for getting first place in the Windland Smith Rice International with his picture of a Lemon shark it won in the Oceans division.

I managed to get a picture in the exhibit as well, and it will be on display at the Smithsonian from mid November.

    This is my one:

  4. I'll add my congratulations too, nice shot of the wrasse. I'll be in Washington early December, any idea were the display will be? From the pictures from last year I'm guessing the Natual History?

  5. Thanks Rick, yes the display will be at the Natural History museum, images will also be online by the end of November

I managed to get a picture in the exhibit as well, and it will be on display at the Smithsonian from mid November.

Congrats to you and Bruce. How long does the Exhibition run? I am down there late this month but may go back down again.

  8. I love that wrasse shot, Gary! Congrats!

I have to say I was STUNNED when I got the call that my "grinning shark" shot had won! I've always been in awe of the stuff in Natures Best Photography, and I only started entering contests last year, so didn't expect to place in such a major competition!

The shot is far from perfect from a technical standpoint (tons of bubbles, right strobe overdone, etc.). But it happened to capture an "expression" (admittedly anthropomorphic) that really seems to grab people...including apparently the judges. I guess my point would be that for those of us who aren't as "artistic" and creative as the more famous Wetpixel experts (e.g., Alex and Eric), there's hope for us , too!

Frankly, there is something to be said for being in the right place (in this case, diving on ShearWater in the Bahamas) at the right time (doing "lemon snaps" at sunset), and with good equipment (this was shot with a 1D Mark II, blasting away at 8.5 frames a second). Who knows if I'll ever capture another shot as "unique" as this one. But I'll keep trying, and meanwhile, I'm going to enjoy my 15 minutes of fame! :fool:

BTW, it is my understanding that the Smithsonian Nat'l Museum of History exhibit will open sometime in early November, and will last well into 2009. I definitely want to see it...I think a trip from Seattle to "the other Washington" might be in my future!

  9. Great honor bruce. Ive admired your pictures. The shot has a real wow factor

  10. Congrats all. A great honour and well deserved.

    Alex

  11. Definitely go see it Bruce.

It is pretty cool to see your image on display and sit back and watch and listen to people viewing the exhibit comment on it. Especially the kids. The Ocean Views exhibit ends at the end of October and I still may try to get to it. Loved last years trip.

Congrats again, great work and you should be proud.

    Cheers

    Todd

  12. Outstanding work guys!

Gary, you didn't tell me about that in Bali! Good on ya! I didn't need to teach you anything! hahaha

  13. Thanks Mike, didn't really know about it when I was in Bali, had been told a few of my pics were through to the finals but never expected any to get selected. Had a great time in Bali and glad my wife organized for me to spend a few days diving with you while I was there, I did learn HEAPS off you.

    Regards

    Gary

  14. Guys, I was in DC for the scuba show a couple weeks ago and had a free day to visit the Smithsonian museum of Natural History and was really impressed with the exhibit, congrats to everyone who had their work shown it was very impressive.
