  1. G'day,

I have two YS110 alpha, and was wondering if I would need to purchase a focus light.

I will be using the camera during both night and day dives.

    Cheers

  2. Yes

  3. Daniel,

You can use the LED modelling lights of the 'Alpha' as a replacement for torch light of a night dive if you like,

but popular advice is that you shouldn't be aiming your strobes directly at your subject. The strobes should

be aimed so that only the edge of the cone of light from the strobe illuminates your subject during exposure.

For best results from your camera's AF system you should use a quality focus light. . . . IMHO

    Hi Daniel

If you use the focus lights on the 110 alphas you will have to point / aim your stobes (or at least one strobe) directly at the subject, this will mean that the hot spot from the flash will be directly infront of the port and will lead to the dreaded backscatter in the resulting image.

Its much better to aim both strobes slightly outwards and paint your subject with light from the edge of the beam, it's a much 'cleaner' and more even light.

So if you have the strobes focus lights on they will be pointing away from the subject.

A small focus light mounted on top of your housing will do the job and the light from it will be 'burned out by the strobe light and won't show in the image.

I hope this is of help. :uwphotog:

  5. HI,

I use inon220s with focus lights but I use a modelling light on top of my housing, for the reason that it does not seem to show hot spots &

the power of the flash over powering the modelling light.

  6. Thank your for all your advice :uwphotog:
