Light requirement at night

  1. Hi there,

When I go for a night dive, I will have a focus light attached to the housing and an another light in my hands. It becomes quickly bulky, so I was wondering how you do it ? Do you attach an extra flashlight to your housing, avoiding the need to carry it in your hands ? Or you simply spare yourself of that extra traveling weight, and would rather hire a carry-on flashlight from your dive operator?

    Cheers

  2. Hi Daniel,

It would depend on the situation and conditions of course, but my baseline is my focus light with a red cover, my YS 250"s led target lights (usually one on) and a small backup in my BC. If everything is on it looks like the spaceship from Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind is crusing the reef.

My favorite though is to turn everything off and dive by the light of a full tropical moon. If you catch it on the right night in clear water with white sand..... It's heaven. Makes me want to call an airline just thinking about it. Probably didn't answer your question, but I feel better!

Back to your question. I always try to take everything I need to have a successful trip and for me that includes night dives. I don't like to trust anybody elses gear. If someone was only planning on one night dive on the trip and it was no big deal I quess I'd reconsider a rental. But with a nice focus light you really don't need it anyway.

    Cheers,

    Steve

  3. Where I dive, a dive light is necessary. I recently bought a DiveRite Led500 which I mount on top of my housing using a ULCS clamp and spotting light adapter. So now my divelight doubles as a spotting light.

  4. Hi Daniel,

If you've got the cash to spend, the canister lights that allow you to attach the head to the back of your hand are great. plenty of light, easy to aim, but your hands are still free. There's a bunch of companies that make them, but check out Divetek for Greenforce lights in Aus.

I saw on another post that you're based in Qld. Not around Brissy are you? Always keen to go for a dive with other photographers (my usual buddies arent photographers).

    Cheers,

    Ryan.

  5. Hi Ryan,

Unfortunately I am based in Townsville, a few ks away from brissy ;)

    Cheers
