DX-1G replace with Ricoh GX-200??

  1. Hi Folks

having bought a DX-1G for my own evil purposes, and used it for a research trip on heron island (look for me on blogspot), I have succesfully flooded my camera.

Lesson for new players: while its a great idea to leave a silica drying packet in your underwater case, its not wise to close the hatch quickly and not check that said pillow has one edge lying across the O Ring. slowly and surely water seeps into your camera casing and kills it. dead.

Anyhoo. I dont really want to buy another sea and sea since they are

A: reluctant to sell camera without case

B: Expensive if youc an talk them into sparing a body

C: the same as ricoh GX-100 which is without sea and sea mode, a feature I have not yet used and possibly wont miss (?!?)

D: the Ricoh GX-200 is the same body (I THINK!) but a slightly larger (0.2 inch) screen

I am about 600k from any shop that I can get my paws on a camera to cross check, Can anyone confirm for me that the 200 will fit into a DX1G case. It seems pretty likely it will but its a lot of back and forth if I am wrong.

    Thanks

    David

At this point, I have someone who wants to buy my DX-1G Sea & Sea housing from me and another who wants the strobes. Would you be interested in buying just the camera as a replacement?

I am selling it as it gets almost no use as I shoot a DSLR topside and UW now. The camera is in excellent condition and never dropped. I have it in a case when not in use. PM me if you are interested and I can perhaps see what I can coordinate. If the new Ricoh fits, I wold love to know too!

This is the only cause of a flooded housing I have ever seen. I now use paper masking tape to secure my silica gels sacks...

  4. Sorry to but the GX200 will not fit the DX-1G housing. This has been confirmed by Sea & Sea here and also discussed here

THe DX-2G will be launched Q2 of 2009 and features an all clear housing I believe. From research that I did, I believe that the GX200 is slightly thinner and the button layout is shifted to the side somewhat....

A real pity. They will also not be selling the housing and camera separately....

BH Photo sells a replacement camera without the housing. Unfortunately it is still pretty pricey. Here is a link to the replacement camera:

    Tough break.

  6. Thanks for the info folks, I had a GX-200 more or less on the way and was going to check then return for exchange if it did not fit. Hopefully I can stop them.

Images of the GX-200 seem to line up but its a little hard to tell for a fact.

    Cheers

  7. This is the only cause of a flooded housing I have ever seen. I now use paper masking tape to secure my silica gels sacks...

..The only cause of any flooded housing or just a DX1G? Yes I am stoked to be one of the first really :)

Now I guess I have a choice, especially since I just bought a sony alpha 700.

    - Buy a genuine sea and sea DX without housing (750 AUD)

    - Buy a ricoh GX 100 (not 200, thanks everyone for the info!), approx 550 AUD is cheapest shown via shopbot

    - Buy an ikelite case for the new Sony A700, which I think is 1500 USD which is approximately the same price as a small 3 bedroom home in AUD given our exchange rate crash

seems a shame to not have the sea and sea, it was a great camera that died before it reached greatness, but buying a replacement PLUS later getting an ikelite case seems almost worse. decisions decisions.

Sounds like you need to figure a few things out.

    1. Getting a replacement camera ( Ricoh GX100 or Sea & Sea DX1G ) will be infinitely cheaper than housing the Sony A700.

    2. Exactly how much money you wish to invest in your underwater hobby.

    3. If you decide to house the Alpha the $1500 USD price you mention isn't any where near the total price as you would need to add at least 1 port and gear ( probably more ) and at least 1 strobe set ( strobe, control arms and synch cord ) apart from paying shipping , customs fees , import duty and taxes in south pacific pesos given you live in Australia.

You have already said the camera was killed due to operator error - are you prepared to repeat the process with your new Sony ??

  9. You have already said the camera was killed due to operator error - are you prepared to repeat the process with your new Sony ??

    Thanks pmoomey

I was actually hoping to NOT repeat the process!! mind you my history with other cheaper underwater cameras has also not been great. The sea gods have taken what seems more than thier share of sacrifices from me.

Yes I know I have several things to figure out, including the weight of my credit card. I was unsure about ports etc on ikelite housings but yes I guess thats more moolah for each lens I want. I do have strobes and arms from the sea and sea which I am hoping could be set up though the ikelite "blah blah iTTL will not work for no ikelite strobes blah blah" is pretty disturbing.

the more I look at the more I might just fix what I have, I have hardly reached the limits of the camera anyway and it DOES seem to take nice pics, no complaints there.

I may be onto a genuine replacement via another poster, or bite the bullet for the ricoh GX100.

thanks everyone for the advice and assistance.

  10. If anyone is interested, I did resolve this issue. The GX-200 is definately not compatible but the Ricoh GX-100 will exchange for the Sea and Sea DX-1G . I have had the replacement a couple of weeks now and it seems fine. I never used sea and sea mode so I don'tknow what I am missing really.

I have had a few issues with getting the strobe to fire when I want it, seems to operate in random fashion regardless of mode, though manual 1 sees to work best.

I am now sailing the wide redundant sea courtesy of low metal prices, so I believe I will head to Bali with my redundancy $ for my dive instructors ticket and cheap living.

    Cheers

    David
