Canon 5DMkII switching from still to video uw

  1. Assuming that manufacturers come up with housings that allow full use of the 5DMkII's capabilities underwater, how would you think one would address the need/desire to use a red filter for video mode, but be able to switch to still mode and get rid of the red filter...during the same dive? It would be easy enough to put a red filter on a given lens, but then you'd be stuck shooting video the entire dive. Could a custom white balance be created to mimic the effects of a red filter for part-time/sporadic video use during dives?

    Ideas/suggestions?

  2. Flip filters are available for most video housings. I wonder if the still housing companies will include them in the 5DII housings...

  3. What about a product that allows you to white-balance? It could even be something built into the port! But maybe that would be too stupid.

    I kid, I kid...

    Carry on. :P

I thought of that, but unlike a video housing, where the camera/lens are only one size, so a flip filter just inside the port glass works great (e.g., Light & Motion housings), here you need something that could work with macro ports, dome ports, and all different lengths of lenses/ports. I don't see how anything inside the housing can do that.

A red "wet filter" that slaps on the end of a flat port would work for lenses that go in a flat/macro port, but what about wide angle (where you would likely use video the most)? Seems like a dilemma to me!

  5. Bruce, you'd first have to look at the 5D2 and how it handles WB... it's AWB. So having a filter will just take 2 stops of light to balance out the blue/greens. To me it's not worth the loss of light, considering how the camera works. Shooting macro you should have lights anyhow. For WA, nothing short of 2 200W HMI will illuminate subjects just 5 ft away, so to me that's a wash and I'd shoot natural light anyways. The implementation of video on the 5D2 also limits latitude due to how it's processed (clipping highlights). I think most of the work on the 5D2 will be done in post, to deal with the limitations of the camera video.

  6. As an aside, I did try using Magic Filters with AWB in my 1Ds2 and 1D2 and it did a decent good getting the colors close about 60-70% of the time. All in natural light, no strobes.
