What is this pygmie

8 posts
  1. While diving off of the west coast of Sulewesi, we came upon this little fellow tucked in a coral head in fairly shallow water. He would flit from one perch to another. Guides said it was not the usual ptgmie that they find there.

Location was off of Northern Manado about 15 minutes by boat from the resort Kima Bajo.

Shot was of the pygmie free swimming

  3. Another view. Tail was bright yellow, head had a mix of orange red/yellow/silver

  4. It looks like a colemani a bit, but its fatter. Maybe it's the H. Pontohi, although Im not sure the verdict is out on if thats actually a separate species.

  5. It's the H.Pontohi from the ID photos and what I've seen of the pontohi the last few years. Let's make it easy on ourselves and call it Pontohi for Indonesia and Colemani for Oz until the scientists duke it out for immortality.

I believe the same tussle is being fought over tha newt Ambon frogfish right now. Everybody wants to be attached to the discovery of a new species. You'd think it's like discovering the cure for HIV or toxic waste or something.

  6. thanks for the info , Pontihi sounds good.

  7. The Colmani I've seen in PNG are quite different than the "Pontohi" I've seen in Indonesia. Pontohi has not been officially recognized and might just end up being a variation of Colmani.

The Colmani was all white and had no appendages or "growths". It had an almost flat, platelike appearance.

  8. colemani should have a spike on the back and I can't see this here
