Mustard - Red Sea Photo Workshop - June/July 2009

  1. After a break in 2008 (when we went to southern Egypt), my regular summer Sinai Red Sea workshop is running again next summer 2009, once again focusing on the wrecks, reefs and seasonal schools of fish in the northern Red Sea (photos taken on previous workshops).

The cost is £1050 for the whole trip (flights, diving, accommodation, food, workshop etc), London to London. Date 27th June to 4th July 2009. Given the $:£ exchange rate (trip cost approx $1600) this would be cost-effective year to come from the States (although I have had folks from the States on all my previous Red Sea trips).

The workshop usually attracts people from many countries, but I prefer people to fly through London, because I do not want to delay the departure of the liveaboard if other flights to Sharm El Sheikh do not arrive on time (which is not unusual). It is possible to book the trip without flights, but I am likely to give preference for places mainly to those flying through London.

The workshop is aimed at DSLR photographers and is designed to help you progress from taking images that come out to photos that really stand out. All my previous Red Sea workshops have filled quickly, so please contact me soon if you are interesting in joining.

Note that I am away for the next week, coincidentally on MV Whirlwind in the Red Sea. At this stage I am just collecting names. Please email me to register interest, but don't expect replies until I am back.

  4. Quick update:

Unsurprisingly, given the exchange rate, there has been plenty of interest in the trip from the States. And for many of these folks it will be their first time in the Red Sea ever, or at least for many years. I have spoken to a few of the regulars and everyone seems keen, so we'll probably do 24 hours - 4 dives on the Thistlegorm. It seems a pity to visit the area and not see it - I don't mind skipping it if the boat is full of Red Sea regulars.

Normally we give it a miss, because it can be a bit busy, but this year we'll probably give it a go. Here are a few photos from last week:

Although the focus of the trip will remain on photographing the seasonal aggregations of snappers, barracuda, emperors, batfish, unicornfish, pufferfish, jacks etc etc at Ras Mohammed.

    Hi Alex

Well I guess I'm a 'Red Sea regular' - but I'm more than happy to have another day on her!

WRT busy; IMO the key is to 'de-sync' with the other boats; much easier when you are a liveaboard (as you will be on the m/v Whirlwind) and to go down when they are coming up; invariably all the day-boats arrive at 'Xhrs' dive at 'Yhrs' surface at 'Zhrs'.......

I never tire of the Thistlegorm (50+dives) - and for those who are joining your trip & diving her for the 1st time - you are in for a treat!
