Waterproof strobes compatible w/ PocketWizards?

4 posts
  1. Hello. I am a sports photographer mainly shooting wakeboarding. I am looking for a waterproof powerful strobe that can be used remotely with my D300. Either with me in a chase boat and the strobe being held by someone in a towable tube behind the towboat. Or with me in the tube and the strobe from a near distance (a tandem rider next to the rider being photographed). So I am not really looking for UNDERWATER strobes, just waterproof ones. What brand/models are compatible with eg. Pocket Wizards?

    Thanks

  2. I have a pair of Fantasea housing for the SB800 that I use in various combination, their housing has a Nikonos type connector and their cord (supplied is also a Nikonos type cord on both end, that makes it very practical since you can plug one into the other as in one SB800 in a housing plugged into the other housing with the Pocket wizard inside, you then trigger said SB flash from your camera mounted pocket wizard. the housing are fairly inexpensive (you can get both for less than the average underwater strobe.

Other variations I tried, camera in housing with pocket wizard in housing triggering (safely) my Speedotron on the side of the pool,

Pocket Wizard in housing connected to housed camera 10 pin socket (using our remote internal cord), using the other pocket wizard as a remote trigger for the camera.

Note: housing the pocket wizard will reduce its range, so you might want to run some test before going out and getting all frustrated

  3. Interesting Jean - are you saying that you house the PW in the Fantasea housing and hook it right up to the hotshoe connector in there? That's cool!

    Cheers

    James

  4. Its been a while and I don't remember if just connecting the wizard to the fantasea hot shoe is all I needed or if I had to run the cord from the top of the wizard to a PC adapter on the Fantasea hot shoe, in any case it was easy and worked.

another approach, 2 strobes on a "Y" cord connected to the main bulkhead, a pocket wizard in a fantasea housing on the secondary bulkhead, then a underwater strobe connected to the fantasea with the pocket wizard receiving the signal (remember that they use a NIK V connector just the same as on most housing) both housed wizard are bopping to the surface (if using Ikelite strobes you can even get 3 & 15ft extension from your dealer) this way you do not require a hard connection for that backkground or fill flash.

I also plan on using some small photoflex softbox on my strobes for close up portrait (a bit like you did with the dance company) should be able to test those after the hollidays, I have a project coming up with synchronize swimmers and i'm looking at softer warmer lighting solutions. I figure running four DS-125 in those soft boxes on two tripod with a wizarded undifused single DS-200 on a boom as a background/hair light. Of course I will also pack a bottle of Pepto Bismol to calm down the likely ulcer I will get from setting up this nightmare and a bottle of Jack Daniel to drown my most likely abject failure :)
