Pixim sensor technology

  1. Here is a link to a company developing a new imager technology http://www.pixim.com/technology/technology.phtml.

Although they're focusing on video rather than still, I thought it was relevant considering the recent E-1 discussions. Pixim is suggesting they can achieve 14 bits at 60 samples per second. Curious to know how this could scale to very high resolutions, either for HD or still.

  2. Interesting idea. Looks like they do this by sampling multiple times during a single exposure and interpolate the value of over exposured pixels. They seem to be able to do it for video with frame rates of 1/60 sec. It'll be much harder for flash still photos where the flash durations is 1/1000 to 1/10000 sec. It's be interesting to see them try.

  3. I'd imagine they sample multiple times and sum the results into an accumulator with more bits than the ADC, but who knows. I'd agree that short strobe durations may be a problem and integrating the hardware into a 10MP sensor may be tough as well.
