Looked for a thread but could not find one. Is Rain-X or similar car product ok to use on the 9.25" Aquatica Mega Dome? Anyone using stuff the like?
Thanks...

I wouldnt- it is a silicone based product and I suspect that once its on it is going to be very difficult to remove- also, it will have a different refractive index from the glass and will likely affect photos even if present in a thin (likely non-uniform) layer.
I, too, am interested in something to apply to the dome to help water shed quicker for over/under shots. Seems to stick pretty well and form nice fat fingers of water instead of shedding.-Jim
I would use Johnsons Baby Shampoo - its cheap , easy to transport in this modern age and doesn't damage ( etch ) the glass.
I was looking for this thread as we depart for Raja Ampat Wednesday!!!!! I'll try the baby shampoo again, maybe take a little bottle and apply as needed.
Do you dilute it and leave the shampoo on? Or simply do a cleaning with the shampoo, then rinse? Thanks!

I asked Jean from Aquatica when I got it and he said yes, Rain X can be used on the Mega Dome. Don't know if this has changed due to further testing.

Maybe Jean could verify this? That Mega Dome is looking better all the time. ![]()
Hi Sorry for the slow response, i've been swamped with work since coming back to work (makes you wonder why we take vacation anyway
). I never got around to testing Rain-X on our dome, my concern has more to do with the fact that this stuff is designed for uncoated glass windshield and since every glass dome we make is AR coated I have no data to confirm if yes or no it can be used without affecting this coating. meanwhile I would stick to peter's recepy of shampoo which I know works wonderfully and if its harmless for a toddler, then i'm sure its OK for our dome, aside from that its a great mask defogger and not bad at washing adult hairs as well (well whatever capillaries I have left on my own personal cephalic dome anyway ;-)) just don't bring it as carry on, it might be mistaken for a weapon of some sort by the TSA. ![]()

I second this; it's a great mask defogger, and it smells nice (like putting a diaper on a freshly bathed baby), and you can put a little on your skin to help slide into your wetsuit, and you can even use it as shampoo.
Buy the Johnson's brand, I used a generic brand as defog once and it burned the stink out of my eyes.

Hey guys,
Can somebody answer Jim's question? I'd love to know too. How do you use it?
Cheers,
Steve
I clean with the shampoo and rinse, I don't use that much BTW and please, Oh please do remove that scratchy ring when doing the clean/rinse portion, i'd hate to be the one to say I told you so.
I dunno about Peter, if he uses a different approach i'd go his direction as he obliviously has more wet time than me.

I smear a few drops over the surface of the dome or mask, splash on a little water, and a brief rinse. Unfortunately with the dome I think any surfactant is not likely to last through the length of a dive, so over / unders need to be done immediately. After that you're going to have to try good ol' spit.

kirk
Johnson's Baby Shampoo is fine for both types of ports and as a mask defogger.

As far as i know that quite alot of latest car's whindshields are coated to limit UV and IR.
We use it on racecars on laminated glass windshield and also on lexan shields.
