Nikon D3x experience today

5 posts
  1. Our camera store received their first D3x today, and I had a brief opportunity to play with it and snap a few pics.

In the short time I had, I thought I'd see what the high ISO performance looked like, Nikon seem to have done a nice job.

All these were converted in NX2 (latest update)

First pic is straight out of the camera 1600 ISO, JPEG here is directly from camera RAW no noise reduction or sharpening etc

Second pic same straight from unaltered camera RAW at 3200 ISO

Third pic is 6400 ISO camera JPEG

Pretty decent high ISO performance on first impression.

There is also a comparison here of the sony 900 and D3x, particularly at high ISO's. Nikon really seems to have made significant improvements. Clearly a different camera to the A900 as it should be for the price.

Jeff - Interesting to note how much better the corners get with higher ISO and presumably smaller apertures. The first shot at ISO 1600 is pretty soft in the lower right corner, and in the next 2 shots it seems substantially better. Shutter speed priority? Even in shots reproduced at such minimal enlargement a difference in corner performance seems evident. What lens and what respective aperture in each please?

    Thanks Jeff.

  3. Steve,

I just shot these pretty fast, all with the 14-24 at 24mm, focusing more or less on the top right corner of the picture frame. I think the softness may be as much DOF issues as corner softness as I was not facing the area squarely and the corners are not in the same focal plane as the point of focus. (Never really thought about that.) All Shutter priority, The 1600 ISO is f4 1/80, the 3200 is f5.6 1/80 and the 6400 f9 1/80th

  4. The image quality looks awesome! Waiting my delivery to try with Sea&Sea D3 housing, both WA and hopefully some extreme macro.

I'm sure the image quality is great, though these are not the shots to demonstrate resolution.

I'm all about high ISO performance at the moment, and if this sensor can combine 1600-6400 ISO excellence in addition to 24MP resolution, then I'm all over it.

The D3x is not in my future though, but when they put this in a D700 body I'll be first on the list.

I look forward to seeing your UW stuff with the D3x.
