Advice on JVC GZ-HD10 or 30 + Ikelite 6016.10

  1. Hi all,

I'm interested in getting into some underwater videoing and was hoping for some advice.

I'm wanting to get a setup for myself that's purely recreational and for my own interest, but that yields some half decent results.

I was hoping someone could give me some advice on the JVC Everio GZ-HD10 or 30 camera and if it's appropriate/decent/crap for shooting some underwater footage.

Failing that, i'd appreciate any advice on camera models, brands and housings that i should look into

    Thanks in advance

  2. Steve, do a search in the forums and try to check up on various camera threads. Many of your answers are already there. Always do a search first and you'll probably find your answer.

    Good luck in your search.

  3. I did actually search first and came up with nothing on this camera or housing.

I will admit fault if there is a thread somewhere, but i couldnt find it

  4. Your search - JVC GZ-HD 10 site:wetpixel.com - did not match any documents
Google can't find anything either. Which in itself is a comment on the suitability - or at least the use of that camera/housing combo by people here.

Something similar would be the new Canon Vixia's. The two new models (can't recall the model #'s) shoot 24MBPS AVCHD which is basically equivalent to HDV except you'll likely need more computer power to import/edit the video.

The tradeoff is much longer recording time. It's an interesting paradigm that in the last couple of years the deciding factor for when you open your housing has switched from recording time to battery life.

Personally I'm a Sony fan. Right now I like the HDR-SR12 or SR11 as it hits the sweet spot for usability. Long recording time, good optics, good housing availability from both the mechanical and electronic manufacturers. I could almost like the Sony Solid State models like the new CX-12 but Memory Duo Pro media prices are too high compared to others that use SDHC media.

For housings +/- $1K I like Ikelite or Equinox. Around $2K consider the L&M Stingray HD. Or the lower priced TopDawg version. Both are made by L&M, the primary difference is the optics.

Above $2k Amphibico (most Sony models), Gates (select Sony models) or Light & Motion's Bluefin (some Sony models) are good housing options. I shoot an Amphibico EVO, it's built like a tank and has given me zero trouble in 3 years. Gates is similar on the mechanical side. I have no experience with the Bluefin.
