Canon 5d Mk2 in S&S 5d housing

  1. Hi,

My friend brought me his new camera & S&S 5d housing today to try.

Some people thought it will be a easy one or hoped to just to fit and

    I have an answer here.

1.It is not 'just fit'. You have to modify.

2.Even to put the camera, we had to turn base plate off little bit on Lathe machine.

Pls, do not try to do this with hand grinder. Camera is now in & in-line with control.

3.On back cover, all left side buttons are not in line but, I think it is possible to make

to reach like I did on Nexus d200 housing and/or you can do same thing by using

little jog dial. S&S put 4 little buttons to do this & 2 buttons work without mod, which

means you can change ISO & several other function with these 2 buttons.

4.On/Off not working ( not a big deal).

    5. S&S did not put 'live view'button on 5d housing & is now needed for live view + movie. I think

I can make a button but, hesitate to drill new hole, even on back window.

I am going to help my friend but, am NOT going to produce mod kit for this housing.

  3. Thanks for posting this info Sam.

Does the viewfinder line up? It looks like it from the photo. How about the lens in the port opening? Is it centered or near center?

    Regards,

    James

  5. Looks promising. I'm planning on having a go at converting an Ikelite 5D housing, if it looks at all feasible. Now waiting for the Mark II to arrive- any day now I hope......

Please post your experience of the conversion. I have the same plans, but might be som time away from receiving my 5DII as supply seems to be rather limited here in Sweden.

    Thanks

  7. Hi Bent,

One snag I'm anticipating is that you need to add a couple of extra push buttons and it looks as though ikelite don't offer these as spare parts (a thread in the DIY section indicates that they couldn't supply them)- they could offer button O rings, e clips and rubber caps, but not the button itself. Maybe I will have to make the replacement buttons as well. It also looks as though the hole is the base plate may need to be shifted, which is more complicated with the TTL controller there. Will let you know how it goes. If it all looks too difficult and time consuming I may just have to bite the bullet and buy a new housing....

  8. That's funny... there's plenty of supply in South East Asia. And prices are falling too.

For a start I do not really need everything to work. I plan to use the C-options to make presets that I can access thus avoiding the need to be able to use all buttons. So, essentially, right now I only need to be able to use the program chooser, the exposure compensation and the shutter. Of course, the more that works, the merrier. And, eventually, it will probably be impossible to live with a housing without the possibility to at least try the video, so I am also seeing the "real" housing as a probable buy. It would, however, be wonderful to make the existing one work!

Weird that there is such a difference in the MII supply. On the other hand Sweden is probably a really minor market, so I guess you guys from larger markets get yours well in advance of us.

  10. The Ikelite 50D housing wasnt able to convert because the TTL circuitry inside the housing wasnt compatible, although it did transmit a signal if you just do manual I think. I suspect the same would be true with the Ikelite 5D2 housing.

Fortunately ikelite offered an $200 upgrade for it where they updated the TTL and added the liveview button, but there was much less to do for the 50D than it sounds like for the 5D2 so they might not do similar.
