Student, beginner to overdraft or not to overdraft?

  1. Hey all

I've done a fair bit of research, looking around here and other sites. I'm basically trying to decide whether I should rush out and get a G9 whilst they are still in as clearence stock. I understand it is a very good camera. However, the thing that is putting me off is that apaprently I'll need a strobe pretty much from the first dive because it is rather crap in low light conditions. Thus pushing the cost to £500+... With the huge difference in price between the canon housing and the ikelite, is there a huge difference apart from the wet swapping of lenses?

I'm new to photography and I'm doing the whole "lets buy a camera that is too complex so we can learn what to not do in photography. Being a keen mountain biker I've been looking at getting a decent camera (manual overrides) for some time, and the G9 is quite a common camera to be seen on the moutain side. My dad uses an fuji f31d, which is cheaper, more of a compact camera, has quite a lot of manual controls to hand and is meant to be one of the better cameras for low light conditions - but living 300 miles away means I can't use it on the other hand i would feel pretty lame just getting the same...and they are out of production.

So, I was just wondering, what compact's are around that are perhaps a step down from the G9 but still have enough functions for me to go about learning for both top and bottom side use, or since the G9 is £230 should I just get this, if so what do you suggest as a budget case and strobe?

    Thanks

    Adam
