5D MkII in Ikelite 5D housing

  1. OK, I now have a 5D MkII to play with in my Ikelite 5D housing. Not sure whether I'll try to adapt it, I might wait to see the new official MkII housings and see whether it offers significant advantages. Some initial observations on the fit:

    1. The camera physically fits in the housing, just. It's slightly higher, so the hotshoe adapter gets caught on the top of the housing. It will be necessary to shave a mm or so off the hotshoe adapter.

    2. Many of the controls line up fine- shutter release, viewfinder, thumbwheel, * button.

    3. On/Off control does not line up at all, but not necessarily a problem (provided you remember to switch camera on before housing it!)

    3. The 'Set' button (used to start video recording among other things)- the push button control appears to be too long and permanently presses the button. This will need to be shortened.

    4. The finger wheel by the shutter release- Does not quite line up, but looks like it would with a small modification of some larger diameter rubber on the end of the control.

    5. The push buttons on the left of the screen- none line up, but if you made modified rubber heads for the controls they probably could be made to work, with the exception of the erase button which is now obscured by the sync cord bulkhead.

    6. You would need to add a new push button control for the liveview (direct print) button.

    7. The push button for the focus point selection (+) button does not reach as it is too short (but this was also the case with my old 5D!). I'm wondering if swapping the push button control for the 'set button' (which is too long) for the * button one might solve both problems, possible with some minor end cap modifications.

    8. There is no control for the AF-ON button. You could do a new push button, or try to modify and the old lever type control currently used for the * button. This would allow you to operation AF-ON without taking your hand off the handle.

So it looks achievable with access to some basic machining tools (which I have thanks to my Dad's workshop). Depending on what the new ike housing looks like (supposed to be available in Jan) I'll decide then whether to start the drilling....

  2. Thanks Eric, I hadn't seen that. Looks like they've shifted the sync bulkhead to make space for the new button on the left.

Yep. I'd have to get used to the strobe on the other handle when I was only using one strobe, but otherwise doesn't seem problematic. Now I just have to convince myself not to buy a 5dmk2... The lack of the housing had so far been the strongest argument keeping me away

Decent low light performance and access to video make it really tempting... I've sorely missed having video for the occassional behaviour video "snapshot" I used to take with my P&S before I moved to the Rebel.
