Full HD Media Player

  1. Santa bought me a Western Digital HD Media Player, which is pretty cool. I'm sure there are other similar solutions out there, but thought for those like me new to moving pictures it seems to be a very simple way to get my new EOS5dmkii 1080 movies into the home entertainment environment.

It's a little black box with 2x USB 2.0 inputs and a HDMI out . You plug in your USB storage device that contains your HD movies (HDD or USB Stick etc) and then plug the HDMI into the tele, button the remote and hey presto... your HD1080 movies on the big screen.

The 5dmkii clips look beautiful on my 42" Panasonic 1080 Plasma, and the part I like is that the clips can just sit with the device and can be played anytime without having to plug in the computer.

It also plays still pics (jpeg, tif, png, bmp and gif); and also music files (mp3 and others).

Not all the bangs and whistles of Apple TV... but 1/2 the price and supports 1080p.

  2. Darren,

Neat little toy eh? But I'm more jealous of your 5D MkII!!!

I've been using the WD TV for almost a month now and loving it. It's got a few niggles but for the price, it couldn't be easier to playback HD content without having to attach a PC/ laptop to your living room flatscreen. It's been especially handy out here in Hong Kong where HD TV broadcasts are so few. So on top of being able to play my HDV videos, I've been able to keep up with some of my favorite TV shows from the states in HD.

If you haven't yet, go over to divefilm.com's podcast on itunes and download some of the HD content to your WD TV. Even at 720p, the video clips look really nice.

A few of my comments about the product can be find in this earlier thread:

  3. Santa got me one of these for Christmas. Works great and is much smaller than I was expecting.

oooops, guilty of not searching the forums for the previous post... but hey, it's xmas

I noticed on the WD site there is a firmware update that fixes a few bugs, but still trying to work out what version is installed on my device.

Gotta love Santa's ability to know what us grown-ups need.....

  5. Ah sweet, didn't see the new firmware. Thanks for the heads up. Been waiting for that, especially the remote issues that it resolves. Looks like they also addressed a lot of features users have been asking for.
