With a min. focus of 38 cm you will need a diopter. Contact S&S.
If I had to guess, I'd say you'll need at least the 40mm extension, and maybe the 40mm+20mm extensions with the compact dome port.
Like deep6 said, you'll need a diopter.
I haven't used the 16-85VR so I can't say for sure.
long zooms can be quite a challenge:
you have 3 issues:
- you don't want the extensions so long that the lens vignettes at 16mm
- you don't want the extensions so short that the lens hits the dome port at 85mm
- even with the 40mm extension, the lens may fit, but it might not be at the nodal point of the lens for optimal sharpness
- you can also try the larger fisheye dome port + a 40mm extension
did you also look at the sigma 17-70? (no diopter needed)
I just got the sigma 17-70 HSM from a friend to test it...
i will try it with the compact dome port and the fisheye dome port to see where it's work better....
i want the 16-85VR for sharks and mantas... i don't think i'll use all the way to 85 underwater ...
Some results :
Sigma 17-70 HSM + Sea&Sea housing (D300)
Compact dome port + 40mm Ex. ring - usable from 17 to 62mm .
Fisheye dome port - usable from 17 to 50mm .
fisheye dome port + 40mm Ex. ring - All The Way.
With the Nikon 18-70 + Same housing.
Compact dome port + 40mm Ex. ring - All the Way.
I will chack the old sigma 17-70 (non HSM) later on...
the old nikon 18-55 work perfect with the compact dome port (no Ex. needed) -but it a kit lens ![]()
the only issues i've had with the 18-55 ed are that i would have got a nicer shot if i had either my 12-24 of 105 on instead. great lens with a +2 underwater.
