Which housing to get?

10 posts
  1. Thanks for the great advice I've received so far on this site!

Ok, next question: Aquatica, Sea & Sea or Subal? (I have been steered away from the Ikelite by many people.) I used a Sea & Sea with my Canon 40D during my first course and it worked great--no complaints. Is this just a matter of personal preference? I understand the Subal is more expensive? As I'll be having this for the foreseeable future, it's important that I get it right.

Also, should I be looking to get a second 40D while they still make them, or am I better off going with two more advanced models (e.g. 50D)?

Thanks so much in advance for the help!

    Hi,

Before we help you spend a whole bunch of money, why don't you tell us a little more about what you want to do with your U/W photography?

If at all possible, I strongly recommend you actually play with different housings. I seem to recall that you are in South Florida from another post, and if so you are in luck. Head up to Reef Photo in Ft. Lauderdale, and let Ryan or one of his crew show you the different housings. Obviously much depends on how much you want to spend and how much you value the additional features and ergonomics of some of the more expensive housings. If you have an interest in SeaCam, head South to Stephen Frink in Key Largo.

If you must get a second body, do what I did. I kept my 40D as a backup and upgraded to a 50D. The 50D fits perfectly in a 40D housing with no modification required.
  5. If you plan on doing some deep diving around 250'. The Aquatica is the one.

The best is always to evaluate all the little details that will make the difference for your needs.

Sometimes, the extra weight of some housing can be a problem, sometimes, you want to go deeper...

  6. I bought a Sea & Sea Housing and 40D from Ryan at REEF after he suggested I drive to his shop and 'hold' the different brands....It worked out for me and I've had a few pros confirm it was a good buy...i.e handles well, moderate price, well built, etc.

    50D for sure.

Be ready to 'shell out some serious clams'...That was the tough part for me!

    Best of luck!

  7. I know that spares and domes can be difficult in some parts of the world, but what about an Anthis/Nexus housing?

  8. HI,

I would also go down the line of going to play with as many housings as you can. As they will all feel

different in the hand, but all the housings have plus & minus points, so buy what fits in your budget

  9. And what about Ikelite? I have just bought one and everyone told me it's a good way to start...
