Which memory card

10 posts
  1. Hi!

I'm looking for a really fast and reliable memory card for G9. I was looking at SanDisk 4 GB (or 8 GB) Extreme III with writing/reading speed 20 Mb/sec., but now there are new cards with writing speeds up to 45 Mb/sec. (SanDisk Ducati 4 GB SD) on the market. My coal is to minimize the writing time of RAW files.

But I have heared that in some point the cameras own "speedlimit" for writing information to memory card will be slower than allowed by the card itself. Clearly there is not a word about cameras writing speed in the usermanual.. or I have failed to find it.

Would really appreciate if someone shared some information about this matter.

    Thanks

I have a G9 and use a couple of different cards speeds with no noticiable change in clearing/buffer though the faster cards are suppossed to help a bit according to This link

Practically I have not the faster card making an appreciable difference for most shooting that I have done with the G9 above ground, though I have noticed a difference when using faster cards when I shoot my 30D, but that may be the way I shoot them.

Jeremy shoots a G9 underwater and I am sure he will see this and add what he has found about practical speed of the card underwater.

    Thanks for the info!

I think that maybe the fastest card's have an effect only with SLR and DSLR cameras. I just did a few testshots with a slower card (i belive it to be 15 Mb/Sec.), but did not notice any difference what so ever. Lets see does Jeremy have something to add here.

I use both a Kingston Class 4 and Sandisk Extreme III very happily with the G9.

I've not found card speed to ever be an issue for video recording and I never use the camera in "continuous" mode ... just not that kid of camera.

In any event, I don't think the camera can write any faster than the 20MB/s of the Extreme IIIs.

    Thanks alot Jeremy!

I'll just go for the 20 Mb/sec. card and save some money.

  6. You can get a really good deal on the Extreme III's or the 8 Gig SD+USB (both Sandisk). I use both w/ my G9.

    Hi James!

    Just ordered that exact thing!

Don't know what it costs in US, but I got it for 80 $ in EU.

    Thanks again

Quite a big pricedifference tough :dancing:

  10. If it is of any consequence, i use 4Gb Sandisk Extreme III cards and shoot up to 8 fps with 12mb RAW files for a few seconds without much in the way of buffer problems and you are unlikely to do that under water with a G9.
