After all of my underwaterpictures were blue although i used the internal flash permanentely, i bought a used YS-60 TTL. I´m planning to use the Digital-Adaptor of Matthias Heinrichs to connect the flash to the camera.
The Question is: how to set up the camera?
Normaly i used the extended color mode of the S30 and switched the flash to "always flash"
Is there a better way to get better colors?
Marcus,
I would hold off on your strobe purchase. You indicate "coming soon" for a YS60TTL.
This strobe is not compatible with your camera. Since the Canon fires a series of preflashes, your strobe will actually fire BEFORE the shutter opens. Meaning, no flash in your photos.
You need a strobe that can "handle" the preflash - either an Ikelite or the Sea and Sea 90DX

Hi Jamesw
Thanks for your advice. In fact the Digital-adaptor i want to buy can handle pre-flashes. It suppresses the flash. You can also make the Ys-60 cope the Pre-Flash, by reconfiguring some cables. I will test both and 'll write a review
Bye
Another option is to use your S30 on manual mode since in manual the camera doesn’t fire pre-flash.
Hi alto
Well the Manual-Mode is not that good, because the housing hasn´t buttons for the 4-way selector.
Another option are the Modes P and S. In this modes you need just the left and right buttons.
Before i found this digital-adaptor i wanted to buy the YS-25. Is it O.K. I assume you are using it with the fiberoptic cable.
Look that thread There is an explanation how to set the aperture and speed in the u/w case.
But I agree its stinks, that the reason I almost don't shoot in manual mode.
I use the YS-25 with fiber optic cable as you said (without it, most of the times the YS don't recognize the light from the inside flesh)
The YS-25 is not too strong, it’s good for macro and close subject but not for WA.

Hi
Yesterday i reconfigured my YS-60 and i first tested the Flash with the Camera.
I just tested dry but the results were amazing.
A totaly dark room was bright like at sunshine. The distance to the next object was 3 meters.
All together i paid:
290 Euros for the Strobe and the Arm
101 Euros for the Adaptor
2 Euros for a small Aluminium-bracket to mount the adaptor.
I can´t wait making my first underwater-pictures with that configuration.
Hello,
I have an S50 and I think the best way to configure it is to use one of the Ae or Tv modes and set your red eye reducton to none and set your flash mode to manual.
Also to conserve battery life you can set your flash power to min.
You don't need to copy the preflash settings. In manual flash mode there is no pre flash.
I had amazing results with my S50 so I know you will love it when you will get underwater.
The cool thing aout digital is that you can change the settings on the fly.
I went and dove in Wilmington NC last weekend and vis was bad (20 ft) but I shoot some great closeups.
