If you had to choose b/w a 50d (newer processor/DX/more MP/noisier sensor/better focus?) or 5d mark 1 (older processor/FX/better overall IQ?) as your main underwater camera, what would you choose given that you own all necessary glass to use both cameras effectively underwater and equal price?

I had the same dilemma when i was buying my stuff as I have loads of glass and had 4, 1 series bodies already... I went for the 5D as it was full frame, cheap, and there was a reasonably priced second hand housing available. 12MP is plenty for just about anything you want to do (I have had 8MP stuff blown up to 5 meters x 3 meters to cover bleechers etc) I think it depends on what you want to shoot as well, the crop sensor is great for macro but the full frame gives you wider f o v for wide angle stuff. I haven't used the 50D but the live view could be a plus (you will get plenty of advice from people who have one here).
Anyway, rambling aside, I love the 5D i rate the image quality up with the 1Ds MkII that I own and for the difference in price....it is great.

I believe the tests show the noise difference at the extremes which I rarely venture into underwater. The FF is ok but with the Tokina 10-17 you still get the FF capability for WA shots with the 50D. I do not know how it compares to the 1Ds as per above. The 50D price is low enough you can carry 2.
IMHO

You will get better high ISO performance with the 50D that is sure.

Majority of people will be more than satisfied with a current generation cropped sensor high MP camera. It's easier to shoot with the lower focal length lenses, and the kit will take up less space and weigh less.
