Help needed - can't read part of a tape

3 posts
  1. Here's my problem:

    Camera: Canon HV10

Tape: Used tape that i had entirely re-recorded with nothing to delete everything that was on it

What did i do: i used this tape to record some images (about 20mn worth) - when i went to capture the footage using log and capture in FCS it works well until one point where it stops capturing. At that point on the camera's screen the date/time info that is displayed flickers then stops. I tried playing the footage without connecting to the computer and it does not work. However if i fast forward i can see all the images i recorded.

After about 2 minutes elapsed on the tape, it plays again and can be captured in FCS.

All i did to try and fix for now is to fast forward then rewind all the tape but that did not change anything.

Does anyone have any suggestions or is my footage lost forever?

    thanks in advance,

    /paul

  2. While I am not familiar with the Canon, it sounds as if this is one of two possible problems.

If when you are log and capturing, and you use Capture Now to capture an entire tape, then it is possible that you have a Capture Now setting in your preferences that is set to less time than the tape goes. For example, if, in your preference settings, you have Capture Now set for 30 minutes, it will stop capturing after such time. Just change the setting. Another word on Capture Now, I hate using this and prefer to batch capture individual clips for which I have set in and out points for. This way, when batch capturing, each clip is appropriately named and I am not stuck with one huge clip full of hard drive footage that I will never use taking up space.

The other possibility is that because you have used this tape before, and sometimes even with new tapes of lesser quality( I always use Sony tape) there is the possibility of drop outs on the tape that screw up the capture. You might want to connect your camcorder to another one and make a digital duplicate of the original tape. Now, your duplicate is also a master since it is all digital. Use the second tape to capture and see if your problem goes away.

When you play it on the HV10 in the "missing" segment, it does not show up? Is there any audio? When you FF, can you find a spot and pause?

Try the tape on another camera and get back.
