Nikon SB102 & compatability with Ikelite

12 posts
  1. I have just seen a Nikon SB102 for sale on ebay. I am looking for a second strobe for my Ike S2 housing and want it to be used in conjunction with my DS50. Does anyone know if this would work?

  2. Well, how would you connect them to the housing?

Would you use the DS50 as a slave? That's what I would recommend. Get a single ike to nik cord and use the DS50 as a slave.

The SB102 is a nice strobe. I used one until a couple drops of water got in and shorted out the circuit board.

    Cheers

  3. Your suggestion of using the DS50 as a slave is what i intended. But i was hoping you could also give some advice on arms.

At the moment i only have the arm that came with the DS50 when i purchased it. It's adequate for macro but only just, so i am looking at replacing the arm system, especially if i get the SB-102.

My initial thoughts are for getting some Ultralight arms.

Can i use these arms with the Ike S2 tray and DS50, SB-102? Do they fit to the bottome of the tray or fix to the quick release at the top of the handles.

For wide angle shots how far away from the camera should i be moving the strobes.

  4. Yes, you can use the Ultralight arms mounted to the top of the quick release handles. You will need an Ultralight BA-IK ball adapter.

  5. Wahahahahaaahahhaaaa...

Mr. Fish - your avatar is just great.

I found this movie once on a german

movie fun site. The title of the movie

I'd like to share with you all. It was:

    "Pinguin Mobbing" ;)

  6. Thanks, it made me laugh too.

I was successfull in my bid to buy the SB-102 from ebay, got it for £280 which i thought very reasonable.

I rang Ocean Optics in London for a quote on the Ultralight arms and they would cost me in the region of £580!!!

I shall be making a business trip to Destin Florida in August so may see if i can pick them up cheaper State side.

  7. I have two of the extra BA-IK ball adapters...

    Email me.

    Cheers

  8. You could also try some TLC/Aquatica arms. They aren't as nice as UL but they work ok abnd are a bit cheaper I believe.

Helix Camera has them and all the adapters/connectors you would need. they have a US bulletin board that you could post a question to, and they will reply in a day or so.

  9. B&H Photo has also been selling off bits and pieces of the Aquatica line for about the last six months and you can assemble a very nice setup inexpensively. They're on eBay, search for Aquatica or B&H.

  10. Just been glancing through the Ikelite website looking for the cables in need and noticed that the do a cable that will connect a Nikon speedlite and a Ike strobe to a Ike SLR housing, but what is confusing me is that the Nikon strobes listed are only the SB103/104/105 and not the SB102. Is the SB102 just not compatible?

I have tried e-mailing Ike but my computer at work seems to be stopping me, so if Ike is reading this it would be nice to get a definitive answer.

p.s. the strange thing is the UK distributer lists the SB102 as beig compatible.

  11. Yes, it's compatible. It's just not that common a strobe and it's older.

Nikon released the 102 and the 103 at the same time.

Then they replaced the 103 w/ the 105 and replaced the 102 w/ the 104

    Cheers

  12. Thanks James,

I have now placed the order for the cable.
