Looks like I am going to India and was looking to see if people have recommendations for power adaptors/transformers and what is needed in their experience. I will have a 15" Laptop, a small video camera with batteries (Sony), some rechargeable AAs and the camera batteries for a dSLR, plus an iPod ![]()

3 prong round pin Type M like most old colonial countries. If your plugs don't need a ground, a twin round pin is fine. 250hz.
Tip for people photos, ask permission but don't pay for it. Don't give the kids in the street ANYTHING, especially in the bigger cities. You're only perpetuating professional street kid rental begging. Bring some cipro, flagyl and immodium.

Thanks for the info, did not know if I also needed transformers or not. Going to check with the doctor to get some drugs. If I don't get them I will need them and if I do get them I won't. Preventative medicine

India is 220-land ... but most hotels I've been to in India have a 110 volt "shaver" outlet in the bathroom.
What do you have that is 110-only?

Cool

Most if not all chargers for portable devices are 100-250v, why would you need transformers? Shavers and maybe a cheap AA recharger not, but just go buy a Maha C204.

Cool, I will take a look and double check on the ones I have. When I started looking around there were some posts (not here) where people were mentioning transformers are needed and not just adaptors, then I realized two things (a) ask here because there is alot of people who I "know" and whose opinions I trust (like you) and (b) does not hurt to double check so I do not fry something

Oh you can also dive in India.
It's a short flight to Port Blair from Chennai or Kolkata.
Btw I've been admonished by someone for suggesting you ignore the old/handicapped beggars. You can give them food but NO MONEY! Watch out for the fake handicappers. You should get a 5D2 for stills and video.

Not to infer any thing negative .........
Many get tourista while in India.
Take hand sanitizer, wash hands as frequently as possible and never touch your eyes, nose or lips.
Based on many successful business trips there.
A wonderful and friendly country to visit.

Hmmm....not sure if I can swing that.

Ah the 5D2 is back...checked on the 30D it is supossed to be back in time it seems...I think fate will dictate what is next (Though I will probably wimp out and grab the 40D or 50D since I have the lenses)

Thanks for the tips. I will keep those things in mind. Probably everything will be fine, but will bring things just in case. Looking forward to the trip....

Which places in india are you visiting ? I guess most info has been given in this post already. If visiting mumbai ask the cab driver for the meter card and then pay according to the card. I guess jeremy will brief you on the rest... Do let me know if you need any further specific info.
Cheers,

Thanks. Got some information from Jeremy also. Picked up the Cipro, flagyl (thanks Drew
) and started Larium (also going to grab Immodium). But it seems almost inevitable that some sort of someething on the stomach side could happen.
@Drew, turns out the 30D is back and repaired. Got the message just as I was starting my amazon check out on the 40D. Oh well, and it is still a tad tempting since a back-up is always a good idea

Maybe I will go lens shopping. To keep it light I was going to bring the 18-250 Tokina which seems to work pretty well as a general lens and the 10-22 for WA scenary. Looking around to see if there is any other good overall lens to consider.

Larium? I'd do Malarone personally. And only when I hit the risky areas like Assam. I'd worry much more about the shots... TB, Cholera etc.

Made it back safe annd sound, thanks again for the tips (Drew and everyone else).
Picked up a Kensington adaptor at the Apple Store which worked fine (also had another one witrh me, but did not even havcee to open it up.) Things charged well.
The best part was the drugs I purchased, they remained closed and in their bags the while trip, not needed
So I now have a collection of Cipro and other things for future use.... -

So I now have a collection of Cipro and other things for future use....Excellent. That's the best place for those pills ... never fun when you have to reach for the Cipro.
